Ensuring Longevity: Expert Tips for Maintaining Your True Kit Inflatable Boat

True Kit is synonymous with excellence in inflatable boat design and manufacturing. The longevity of your boat is not just about superior craftsmanship but also diligent maintenance. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the essential practices that will keep your True Kit inflatable boat in prime condition, ensuring that you will get years and years of trouble free boating.

Routine Cleaning: The First Line of Defense

The sea is a magnificent yet challenging environment for any vessel. Salt, dirt, oil and sand can take a toll on your boat. After each outing, rinse your inflatable with fresh water, focusing on areas that are prone to debris accumulation. For a deeper clean, use a specialist inflatable boat cleaner that is compatible with the German-made Valmex® fabric of your True Kit. These pH-neutral solutions remove grime without damaging the boat's material.  One cleaner that we use in the True Kit workshop is called Speedclean, a product by Aurora.  It is applied with a damp microfibre clothe and will remove most of the daily stains.

Dealing With Sand: Your Boat's Gritty Foe

Sand can be abrasive and, if left in place, can wear down the protective layers of your boat. To ensure complete removal, use a soft brush to dislodge sand from hard-to-reach spots and vacuum it out. Pay special attention to valves and corners where sand can hide. Once all the sand is removed, rinse thoroughly.

Adhering to Guidelines: The Pillar of Inflatable Boat Safety

Your True Kit boat is engineered to perform within certain parameters. Always adhere to the recommended tube pressures, engine size, and payload limits as specified in your owner's manual. Your True Kit pump has a pressure gauge to ensure your boat's tubes are inflated to the ideal PSI for optimal performance and longevity.

Proper Storage: A Key to Inflatable Boat Care

Before tucking your boat away, ensure it's bone dry. Any moisture can lead to mildew, mould and smells. For storage, you have two options: deflated in a protective bag to save space, or inflated at lower pressure to maintain shape (1-2 psi). Whichever method you choose, store your boat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Sun Protection: Preserving Your Boat's Integrity

Prolonged exposure to the sun's UV rays can be detrimental to any marine craft. When not in use, cover your boat with a UV-resistant cover or store it in the shade. UV protectant sprays can add an additional layer of defense for the exposed parts of your inflatable.  Two examples of UV protectants are: 303 Marine Aerospace Protectant and Aurora Polyguard.  A further more permanent option is to clear coat your inflatable boat with a inflatable boat paint like Marine Shield by Resene.  This provides a lasting physical shield for the boat from the elements.

Rodent Protection: Keeping Unwanted Guests at Bay

Surprisingly, rodents and other pests can take a liking to True Kit inflatable boats and can cause significant damage to your boat. When storing, elevate the boat off the ground and consider placing it in a rodent-proof bag or container. Mothballs or ultrasonic repellents can also deter these critters.

Engine Maintenance: Powering Your Adventures Safely

Boat engines require regular service, we recommend servicing annually. If storing your boat for an extended period, ensure you drain the fuel and run the engine until it stops to clear the lines. Regularly flush your engine with fresh water, especially after use in saltwater, to prevent corrosion and buildup.  Products like Saltaway can be used to flush the engine to remove stubborn salt build up.  This is a particularly good idea at the end of the season before the engine is stored for the winter.

Seasonal Checks: Preparing for a Safe Launch

At the start of each boating season, perform a comprehensive check. Inspect for any signs of wear, ensure all valves are functioning correctly, and that repairs from the previous season have held. Inflate the boat and give it a wash with soapy water - this will give it a fresh clean and you will spot any leaks before your first boating trip of the season.  If you do identify any punctures, you can follow this guide to make the repairs.
